bio
Courtney Griffin (b. 1990), painter and contemporary embroidery artist and new mother, lives and works in Colorado (US). She creates eclectic, whimsical and nature-inspired art on silk fabric. Her process involves layering washes of acrylic paint, creating a watercolor-like effect and embellishing with iridescent pigment, intricate free-hand embroidery and fabric appliqué.
She explores the interplay of light, shadow, and texture, resulting in pieces that are visually intriguing, evocative and playful. Her work, self-titled as ‘containers of devotion’ invites viewers to honor and celebrate the cyclical rhythms, embodied in both dark and light, of their humanness.
She became a mother this spring, and her current work features repeating imagery and symbols to represent a rebirthing of a self and identity as both mother and artist. She uses symbolism and representative motifs including vases, eyes, seeds, suns, moons, and botanicals to explore the spectrum of emotions experienced in new motherhood – birth, death, grief, euphoria, joy, sorrow. Her new work is highly embellished with embroidery, an art-making practice that tethers her to the monotonous repetition of motherhood.
Collectors seek out her work in times of celebration and grief, noting that her work supports them in honoring the complexity of human experience. Her work has been featured in publications and collections across the globe.
